Part design:Titration plates with 96 cavities are widely used
in medical and biotech laboratories. Small amounts of substances
are located in the tiny V-shaped cavities and sent for analysis.
Initially, Nelipak made these titration plates from PVC and PETG.
A change to the testing program involving rapid temperature
fluctuations between 50 °C and 105 °C meant that an alternative
material was required. Makrofol® DE 1-4 extruded film proved ideal
because it is heat resistant to 135 °C and also benefits from
lower internal stresses than competitors’ materials. This makes it
possible to mold the 96 cavities without cracks developing, using
a fully automatic high-precision thermoforming process with
minimal stresses and distortion. The temperatures of the mold
coated on one side are controlled to within ± 3 °C in order to
comply precisely with the cavity wall thinness required for
certain analyses to enable rapid heat transfer through the film
from heating blocks onto the substances to be tested. The plates
are produced in a Class 10000 cleanroom and individually
packaged.
