Part design:

Plastics for medical applications must enable simple, reliable sterilization. Polycarbonate is ideal in this respect, as demonstrated by the breast implant packaging manufactured by Nelipak. This packaging is made from our Makrofol® DE 1-1 extruded film. Thanks to the high heat resistance of polycarbonate, pressurized sterilization using superheated steam at a temperature well above 100°C is possible. Due to its low internal stresses, the film can be thermoformed precisely with minimal tension and distortion. Its excellent transparency allows a rapid visual check of the pack contents, while its impact resistance and stiffness protect the implants against external influences. The special grade of Makrolon® polycarbonate from which the film is made satisfies specific requirements of international standard ISO 10993-1 relating to the biocompatibility of plastics that come into contact with body fluids and tissue.

In addition to superheated steam, ethylene oxide gas and other chemicals can also be used to sterilize Makrofol® DE 1-1. For sterilization with gamma and electron rays we have developed Makrofol® LP 209. This method of sterilization is increasingly being used in medical technology, partly due to its effectiveness. Thanks to a special additive system, the transparent polycarbonate film is colorfast and does not turn yellow when sterilized using high-energy rays. The potential is particularly high for applications such as titration plates, instrument boxes, covers for blood and fluid warmers and packaging for implants.
